In America, people have strong feelings about health insurance companies, and when it is known that the shooter he had written “deny,” “remove,” “defend” on other weapons, they gathered around. It turns out that Mangione was spotted at a fast food restaurant in Altoona, Pennsylvania, by someone on Bluesky. he called it SnitchDonald’s; others briefly comment-bomb place. (Google later pull many negative comments.)
Mangione appeared in a Pennsylvania court Monday night to be charged with two counts of firearms and one count of false ID. He also faces three misdemeanor charges. He did not enter the request. He was later charged with murder in Manhattan. As soon as his name was released on Monday, the internet search, and the judgment, about him entered a new phase.
People have posted old X accounts, and GitHub pages that look like theirs. A detailed search of what appears to be his Goodreads account revealed that he had read Michael Pollan and Aldous Huxley. He had an Ivy League education and probably liked Joe Rogan and/or Tucker Carlson. What some people on the Internet thought of as a left-leaning anti-capitalist turned out to be a man with as complex and controversial beliefs as anyone else on the Internet. Memes, it seems, have also reduced the person the Internet wanted them to be, an expression of their frustrations with US health care or the power of big corporations.
Someone who would kill a public health official may share these frustrations, but only partially, with people who like him on the Internet.
This, perhaps, makes Mangione Duck Milkshake moment is not Milkshake Duck time at all. Yes, people are reassessing how they saw Thompson killed and what he likes, but they’re not completely abandoning him. After the police released his criminal at the end of Monday, they gave a complete picture of the person who looks good from the photos that they released in the last days, on the Internet. thirsty he was everywhere. Fiction writers stay on the job. Etsy is full of sales.
As Ryan Broderick put it his article on Garbage Day On Monday, “it’s possible that this is the most connected America, other than the people in its highest tax boxes, that has been on the news since the Internet was invented.”
Need some proof? Look no further than Daily Wire host Ben Shapiro’s YouTube channel. In the video “The EVIL Revolutionary Left Cheers Murder!” the answers were quick and unequivocal: “TRUTH: Both the left and the right are rejoicing!” We don’t care about your feelings”; “I’m not buying into the ‘left and right’ crap anymore Ben, I want health care for my family”; “Just because a ‘leftist’ likes something doesn’t mean you naturally have to hate it. Get up and read the room bro.” Not exactly the kind of banter found in a comment section manosphere movie.
Public opinion on the future of Mangione and Thompson will continue to change for several weeks. So many details will appear. Like any great man, Mangione’s entire life will be scrutinized, but what is said about him may seem small compared to what the response to his actions says about everyone else.
