Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-Minn.) said Monday afternoon that President-elect Trump’s threats to deport millions and end birthright citizenship will strike “absolute fear” across the country.
He warned that under the Trump administration, teenagers could be sent “to a country they don’t know and haven’t been to.”
“This is what he plans to do to Americans. And it’s not only going to destabilize so many communities, it’s going to create outright fear in so many people,” he told CNN’s Kaitlan Collins during a Monday interview
Trump is poised to crack down on both legal and illegal immigration, and in an interview Sunday said he intended to end the practice of birthright citizenship, which critics say would challenge the Constitution.
Omar said she is most concerned about the tactics agencies will use to detain illegal immigrants with mixed family status.
“Because how are you going to find people? How do you create distinction? Are they going to attract people who look like they might be an immigrant? Are they going to take people out of their jobs? Are they going to take people out of their places of worship?,” he asked.
The Minnesota representative stressed that Democrats will need to work with local legislatures to ensure residents are aware of their rights.
“We have to do everything we can. In Minnesota, there are so many counties where the county doesn’t have a relationship with ICE, where they’re not, you know, identifying people through that system,” Omar said in the interview.
“So we have to find ways to implement programs and put in place protections and boost advocacy and fight like we’ve never fought before to make sure our communities remain safe and stable.”
