MixRift has launched its free-to-play multiplayer shooter Crit Attack.
This wave shooting game is the third game from the original mix and it’s a lot of fun.
I played the game in a coffee shop, wearing a Meta Quest 3 theme. It was fun to see the wall of the coffee shop fall down and reveal the opponents. I had a gun in each hand and had to shoot quickly to dispatch the opponents before they got to me.
Bobby Voicu, CEO of MixRifthe said in an interview that the game was designed for three generations of members – grandparents, parents and children – so that they could all play together. The game is available today on PlayStation VR 2, Meta Quest and Steam.
Just in time for the holidays, the game is simple and free to play, and is compatible with Meta Quest 3, 3S, Pro and 2.
The game makes money through in-app purchases such as upgrades and extra lives, which are available to get the most out of the game. But players can also win this by playing the game for a long time.
Your job is to protect your living room or office from the giants. The combination of game mechanics (arcade wave shooters), graphics and the freedom to pick them up make Crit Attack unique in the Meta Store, where the emphasis is on more controlled, multiplayer, longer stories. Between waves, you can power up your weapons to deal more damage or withstand more attacks. Over time, you get better and better tools.
With the help of the growing market of ‘family-friendly’, less or less violent games, and the desire for games and entertainment of the 80s and 90s brought today, Crit Attack is a simple and easy game that anyone can understand how to play. use and play, Voicu said.
“By listening to our audience we saw a trend, driven by TV shows like ‘Stranger Things’ or games like Stardew Valley and Minecraft with pixelated graphics,” said Voicu. “This helps the whole family enjoy our games – the generation that started playing arcade games, the generation that played the first consoles and, finally, Gen Z and Alpha who can use their MR devices for competitive and fun games.”
The launch of Crit Attack underscores the company’s vision of driving mass adoption of MR and making gaming accessible to everyone by creating games that are easy for everyone to play, and deeply immersive. It’s a great gift for the whole family to enjoy – what better way to spend Christmas than by teaming up to fight against many monsters, said Voicu.
The MR shooter has a “friendly” look and feel. Arcade wave shooters are often combined with graphics for the whole family to play. These monsters are cute and annoying rather than scary, appearing in waves – making it a lot of fun for everyone.
It is accessible, simple and easy to use. I picked it up and played it after a few seconds, shooting the enemies and then reloading and dropping my hand to the ground and bringing the gun back. You just aim crosshairs at the monsters and then pull the trigger.
It encourages that kind of “one more time”. Arcade shooting mechanics make them the best short game that players want to do “one more time” according to user feedback, because every time they understand what to do to destroy more waves.
And unlike many VR titles, it has a limited time commitment required to play – a casual experience, where you can play for half an hour or less.
There is also a Hall of Fame board. It follows trends around the world to showcase the best players in the world, creating the beginning of a real gaming community.
There are different ways to play. Inside VR, you can get close to the gates on the wall and shoot the opponents at close range first. Then, when they get too much, you can back away from the wall and get more time to get them out, Voicu said. When you sit down, they come at you so fast that it’s an easy place to shoot them down. When you meet the boss, he will damage you a lot.
At a certain number of waves, the battle changes and becomes infinite.
“We make prototypes to see if the game machine is interesting. If people come without us to install the save machine, and if they just like the actual game machine, then the game is worth expanding,” said Voicu. “We kept doing this because the players sent us messages saying they really wanted to play the final game.”
Voicu began to believe in mixed reality a while ago when he saw an apparition with a crack in the ceiling that became a hole in the wall. In his head he knew it was real but it seemed so real that he was shocked.
Voicu said MixRift believes that MR has the power to change the landscape of gaming, making it more interactive, accessible, and fun for players around the world. The company’s games are designed to be intuitive, allowing seamless integration into players’ daily lives to ensure that every adventure is authentic.
The company’s developers have a history of mobile games where rapid development was essential. Voicu sold his mobile game company and later moved into VR. Voicu said the company had been working on the Crit Attack game for several months. The team planned to launch its version initially but decided to revamp the technology to be more family-friendly after receiving feedback.
MixRift’s unique strategy focuses on game mechanics, creating and releasing games that resonate with audiences, and launching them quickly rather than spending years on a single title, Voicu said.
“While the demand for MR events is growing, especially led by tech giants like Meta and Apple, there is a lack of high-quality MR games out there,” said Voicu. “We are ready to tackle this because our flexibility allows us to enter the unique games that were created for MR. We are not just making games, we are pushing the boundaries to create new types of experiences that we experience, changing the way we interact with this technology in our daily lives.
MixRift has been at the forefront of the MR/XR revolution since its inception, pushing the boundaries of seamless integration between physical and digital content to create ‘wow’ moments for players, Voicu said.
The company developed the game with half a dozen developers. They spread to different parts of Europe.
In August, MixRift raised $1.6 millionmainly aimed at accelerating its sports development activities. The company’s additional games Hell Horde (MR Survival) and Fractured (MR 3D puzzle) are available on Apple Vision Pro and Meta Quest. MixRift has important moves ahead, including a new, exciting gaming title in the first quarter of 2025.
In the long run, Voicu foresees fused glasses hitting the market that look like normal glasses. That’s when he expects a large mixed reality gaming market to remove.
“I really believe we are very close, in the next three years, to where we will see the first glasses that are like sunglasses,” he said. “I think this would be a great incentive for game developers.”
