Manchester United are reportedly eyeing Atletico Madrid director Andrea Berta as a replacement candidate Dan Ashworth after leaving Old Trafford.

The Red Devils have just decided to part ways with Ashworth after a poor performance in the summer transfer window, with the former Newcastle and Brighton manager struggling to replicate his previous success in the transfer market.

Ashworth oversaw a display that saw the likes of Joshua Zirkzee and Matthijs de Ligt fall were brought in, with a lot of money spent again trying to get Man Utd back to the top, but with results and performances that fell short of expectations.

With Ashworth now gone, United need to properly appoint the next sporting director and report back Gianluca Di Marzio claims that Bert is being watched by the giants of the Premier League.

Berta did something smart during his time at Madrid, discovering talents like Rodri before they became big names, with the midfielder eventually ending up at Manchester City and winning the Ballon d’Or this year.

Additionally, Berta signed Julian Alvarez for Atletico this summer, and has generally overseen a lot of good work to continue strengthening Diego Simeone’s side without spending a fortune on signings.

That looks like exactly what United need now after so many bad choices in the post-Sir Alex Ferguson era, with the club making the wrong big-money signings time and time again.

Berta has a wealth of experience and could be a strong candidate to work with new manager Ruben Amorim, who will need a good director alongside him to help improve this struggling squad.
