I just read a very good book about recovering from spinal stenosis: “Healing Your Own Spinal Stenosis: Strategies for Improving Spinal Health” by physical therapist Terri Night. First, this is very encouraging, pointing out that many older adults suffer from spinal stenosis without any symptoms. She points out that we can adequately control factors such as inflammation and hydration status, which play a role in the severity of symptoms. Over the years she has worked with many patients did Having severe symptoms, often more severe than mine, they improved dramatically using the strategies outlined in the book, including aerobic exercise, stretching the spine and hips, strengthening the muscles around the spine, and lifestyle changes. If symptoms persist, or if you have more severe symptoms (such as numbness or bladder control), surgical options will eventually be discussed.
I got some really good ideas from this on how to modify my activities to avoid inflammation of the lumbar spine, as well as new exercises to try. I highly recommend this book to anyone suffering from spinal stenosis.
