WordPress hosting company Automattic said Monday that it is acquiring it WPAIa startup that develops AI solutions for WordPress, at an undisclosed cost.
WPAI has other features such as CodeWP, a tool that uses AI to create WP plugins; AgentWP, an AI assistant for WordPress website builders; and WP Chat, which is an AI chat for WordPress related questions. WPAI also stated on its blog that CodeWP and AgentWP will be left in their current avatar and will be integrated into Automattic’s final offering.
Automattic noted that as part of the acquisition, the startup team will be joining the company to lead WordPress AI efforts.
“They’ve been working to test, build, and integrate intelligent AI solutions into the ecosystem to redefine the way users and developers interact with WordPress,” Automattic said in an announcement.
Automattic CEO Matt Mullenweg also made a separate announcement about the acquisition on his blog.

“This includes developing AI standards for WordPress, improving the platform’s functionality, and creating tools that help users create and manage better websites. We will work closely with the WordPress team to make the most of this while maintaining an open workflow,” the company said.
Over the past few years, Automattic has already launched several AI tools to help users good writing is short posts. Post new acquisitions, the startup will focus on building AI-powered systems and web-building tools.
The WPAI acquisition is Automattic’s second acquisition in two months. Last month, the company made a Grammarly’s competition for creators named Harperwhich checks grammar locally on the device.
Both Automattic and Mullenweg are to fight crimes with a WordPress WP Engine website. The latter accused Mullenweg of anti-competitiveness. On the other hand, Mullenweg and Automattic said that WP Engine violated the “WordPress” trademark and did not contribute enough to the ecosystem. The judge in the case indicated last month that the court would issue a preliminary injunction. However, the reality of the system needs to be changed.
