International Cricket Council (ICC) has fined West Indies national cricket team player Alzarri Joseph for his antics during the first ODI against Bangladesh national cricket team. A match was played between two teams in Saint Kitts and Nevis.
Alzarri Joseph has breached Article 2.3 of the ICC Code of Conduct for Players and Support Personnel. This refers to the “use of audio obscenity”. This happened after the West Indies national cricket team player exchanged a few words with the umpire.
Alzarri Joseph used abusive and insulting language during an exchange with the fourth official before the start of the game. The umpire warned the pacer to avoid stepping onto the field with spikes on his feet, which led to inappropriate language.
However, it did not go down well with the fast bowler as he was seen arguing with the umpire. As a result, Alzarri Joseph was fined 25% of his match fee for breaching Level 1 of the ICC Code of Conduct.
Under ICC rules, Level 1 offenses under the ICC Code of Conduct carry a minimum penalty of an official reprimand, a maximum penalty of 50% of the player’s match fee and one or two demerit points.
Not only that, he also received one demerit point. This was his second offense in the last 24 months, the first being during the ODI series against the England cricket team. Sanctions were accepted by Alzarri Joseph, who admitted the offense and agreed with the proposed punishment by the match officials.
This decision was made in consultation with Jeff Crowe of the Emirates ICC Elite Panel of Match Referees, and a formal hearing was not deemed necessary. Kumar Dharmas is the referee on the fieldena and Leslie Reifer, third judge Asif Yaqoob and fourth judge Gregory Braithwaite equalized the charges.
Coming to the first match, West Indies National Cricket Team won the match by a huge margin of 5 wickets. They restricted the opposition to a total of 294 runs and chased down the target within 48 overs of Sherfane Rutherford’s century.
Joseph had a decent outing with the ball in the first ODI. The fast bowler took two wickets and gave away 67 runs. He would hope to put in a better performance in the next match as West Indies would look to win the series. The next game of the series will be played on Tuesday (December 10). It remains to be seen whether the hosts will win the second game of the series or not.
