Liverpool manager Arne Slot says goalkeeper Alisson showed why he remains first choice at Anfield with several key saves in Girona’s 1-0 win.
Alisson has been sidelined with a hamstring injury since early October, but has returned to Spain.
Substitute Caoimhin Kelleher impressed during his absence, but Alisson showed why he is Slott’s first choice with several saves before Mohamed Salah’s penalty gave Liverpool victory.
“Alisson definitely didn’t look like he’d been out for two months,” Slott said.
“I joked with the players that maybe they wanted to see how fit he was because they let him make so many saves.

“But he showed why I always say he’s our number one.”
Liverpool defender Andy Robertson also praised his goalkeeper but was unhappy with how many chances he allowed Girona, with Alisson saving Alejandro Frances and Miguel Gutierrez in the first half.
“It’s been out for a while so maybe we had to see if it was rusty or not, and it sure wasn’t,” Robertson said.
“But we have to have more control. We can’t leave so many gaps, we have to press aggressively and much better. Especially in the first half, it was a little too much back and forth for our taste.”
Slot was also complimentary of the opposition, who really caused Liverpool problems but eventually slumped to their fifth defeat in six games, thanks in no small part to Alisson.
“I almost feel very sorry for Girona, they are such a quality team and they deserve a lot more than the three points they have had so far,” said Slot.
They had a very good game plan today, but we had a very good goalkeeper.
